"I should continue to be grateful and thankful to so many" : February 06, 2009 : Friday Rajashekhar Devarai Write up inspired by Deborah Norville. The new Science of happiness and good health : Thank you is the operative phase/Deborah Norvill.- Readers Digest, February 2009, 50(2), 62-70pp. The write up is an extract from the Author's work : "Thank you power." It is so coincidental that I pick up Readers Digest Feb 2009 issue for a casual reading. I very well know how valuable it is to read RD as often and as regularly as possible. Thank you RD for introducing me to Deborah and there by couple of psychologist. I firmly believe that basically as an individual in society I have always valued the grace, the help, kind wishes, warm support, a lovely pat, a kind look and a timely advice (in the times that were hard to digest and face by the near and dear ones). I trust myself and I firmly believe that I have thanked all those kind and graceful people from time to time since my childhood. I am really proud of myself for being grateful to people who showed their concerns towards me directly and or indirectly. Ø How can I forget my parents who reared me up and dreamt big about me? Ø How can I forget my uncles and aunts who poured their unconditional love and affection towards me? Ø How can I forget my two grandma's who were overwhelmed just to see me and feed me all the time? Ø How can I forget my uncle who taught me swimming and what not. How can I forget that moment when I received a gift of new clothes that were brought from Gangtok by my uncle? Ø How can I forget my father patting me and even after failing miserably in the exams. Ø How can I forget my teachers who trusted me in advance. Ø How can I forget my friends who extended their helping hand in times of hardships. Ø How can I forget my teachers and friends who talked to me in english and made me speak english. Ø How can I list the people who cared me who supported me, who groomed me, who held me high, who treated me as one of them. … when actually I was no one? It is a futile attempt on my part to remember all those great soul who matter a lot for shaping my personality. The list is endless. The ideas expressed by Deborah are quite acceptable. Indeed the psychologist works cited in the write up viz David Patrik Columbia, Robert Emmons, Michael McCullough are valuable in this regard. According to Emmons, "gratitude is a demanding quality, a rigorous quality. It is a discipline, an exercise. According to Emmons gratitude may not come easily, but it can be developed in the following ways : Ø Record your Thanks Ø See the patterns Ø Catch the boomerang Ø Seize the moment Thank you Basava for giving me an opportunity to read papers like this, thank you ... for blessing me for making so many kind people around me. Thank you .... for gracing me to be grateful to you, my parents, my small family, my dear, dear and intimates, divine souls close to my heart and soul, my relatives, my friends my bosses and my colleagues. If at all I have impacted people around me, it is only because I have not left any stone unturned to thank them, respect them and revere them. If at all I am powerful it is only because I don't get tired in thanking. Bless me Basava/.......to keep me busy in thanking and respecting others. February 3rd 2009 A reflection of a Librarian on "A matter of trust/Arun Maira.-Times of This educative centre page article by Management consultant Arun is educative and sensitizing. It is specially useful to commoners and non-finance-non economists to grasp a minimum of understanding about concepts like : recession, global meltdown, global slowdown, global meltdown etc. The much valued freedom that the business need, the extent of accountability and responsibility that is required of them towards government and society are well brought out in the paper. A reasonable and significant ethical level of conduct on the part of businessmen; transparency and required flexibility of rules and guidelines on the part of Government and a trust and belief of people towards both Government and Business work towards building sound global economies. As brought very well by Arun business which always wanted less and less interference by government, now wants their unquestioned and unlimited support both in terms of finance and moral backing. It is true, these troubled times need fundamental changes in the ways governments function, in the way businesses function and in the way people empower and trust governments and business. Are we all to move forward towards a disciplined flexibility and a reasonable balancer between freedom and equity. What do we think about this as librarians? Directly or indirectly, to a more or less extent we too are business, a different servicing business. Apart from asking more and more in terms of salaries and perks and of course budgets; we need to learn the economics of financing of the libraries, our duties and accountability towards all stake holders , I mean the institution we serve and the government and people at large. As librarians let us learn more and more lessons of being sensitive, responsible and accountability and lateral thinking, at these troubled and hopeless times. Shall we pledge to be out of the box, shall we restart ourselves to prove our social relevance and indispensability. We have come of age. Let us re-affirm ourselves, and continue our age old affinity with knowledge and its power. Rajashekhar Devarai Librarian blog : http://indialibrarian-intl.blogspot.com

Hello RajashekharThanks for the review ! How did you come across this book ?Is it popular with the people in Hyderabad ? Its great to see how the work is spreading wings..Arbinger in India is represented by Managing Director, Mr. Nagendra Iyer from Bangalore. He can be contacted at +91 9844 066 657By the way - I went deep into the box reading this review... being associated with Arbinger work for about a year... I already seem to have developed an 'attachment' to the work !!! :)...Especially - I have not seen the same treatment / definition of Self-Betrayal as done by Arbinger ever before.. In the context of Arbinger's work -- Self-Betrayal -- has a specific meaning - not-necessarily the dictionary meaning. So - when I see in your review - mention of synonyms or definitions of Self-betrayal - I don't know if they do enough justice to the understanding of the term as expressed by the work of Prof. Terry Warner..I would caution against the use of other dictionary meanings for this term as it may confuse or make the audience pre-judge the work.Don't know if I make sense from all the above...There are others in this community - who are much more involved with the work who may see differently and definitely more 'out-of-the-box' than me !!!cheersvenu

Hello, Rajashekhar:Thank you for posting your review. It's fascinating to me to consider how others have experienced a work that I, too, have experienced. I appreciated being able to read your review and "see" through your eyes. I think I agree with Venu about the referenced definitions you've noted. They are all very interesting, and each at least tangentially related to the Arbinger material, in this way: my understanding is that in the field of philosophy-psychology, there were unanswered or unaddressed inconsistencies or anomalies in the approach various great minds took toward the problem of self-deception, and the manner(s) in which human beings respond to stimuli of various kinds.Dr. Warner and his colleagues have worked to clarify the misconceptions surrounding self-deception, and the result is Arbinger's very unique work. Personally, I find the concepts relevant on so many levels in my day to day living and interactions that I see them as universal. Your point #4 describes very well how I feel when I acknowledge my boxes...and more importantly, acknowledge the reality of the people I meet, work, live and in all ways exist alongside.Thank you again for posting this. It is helping me re-examine the definitions I hold for the key concepts of Arbinger philosophy. All the best you you and your co-author on the piece. Looking forward to additional thoughts you may have.:) Heather

Hi, Venu and Heather,Thanks for quick responses to our review. The thing is We (Rajashekhar Devarai lotus5673@yahoo.co.in and J.Padmavathi padmavathilbnrcnifthyd@yahoo.co.in) read this book about 5 years back when we worked together at Hyderabad. We were deeply moved by the concept and its relevance in our lives. Though the review was prepared that time only, it could not be communicated for publishing .... as the draft got misplaced. I recently got the copy and thought it better to put it on this blog.I need to know more and more about the contribution of Arbinger.Best wishesRajashekhar Devarailotus5673@yahoo.co.inmy blog address : http://indialibrarian-intl.blogspot.com
